Terms of service

The agreement between you and Codas Labs when you use TribeTale.

Last updated: 27 October 2026

1. Who these terms are with

TribeTale is provided by Codas Labs, LLC, a North Carolina limited liability company (“Codas Labs”, “we”, “us”). These terms apply when you use the TribeTale service, including tribetale.com, publication sites hosted on TribeTale, the TribeTale iPhone app and our programming interfaces (together, the “Service”). By creating an account or using the Service you agree to these terms and to our acceptable use policy, which is part of them. If you use the Service for an organisation, you agree on its behalf and confirm you are allowed to.

2. Writers and readers

A writer runs one or more publications on TribeTale: writing posts, sending them by email and, if they choose, selling paid subscriptions. A reader subscribes to and reads publications. One person can be both.

Each publication is run by its writer, not by us. Writers are responsible for what they publish and for their relationship with their subscribers, including the emails they send and the prices they charge. We host the publication and provide the tools.

3. Your account

You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service, and old enough to agree to these terms where you live. Give us accurate information and keep your sign-in method secure — an emailed sign-in link, a password, or Sign in with Apple, Google or Microsoft. You are responsible for what happens in your account. Tell us at support@tribetale.com if you think someone else has used it.

4. Your content

You keep ownership of what you write and upload. You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, copy, format, send and display your content only as needed to run the Service for you — for example, to publish your posts on your publication site, send them to your subscribers, show them in the app and produce the audio version of a post. This licence ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies already sent by email, copies kept in backups until they expire, and anything the law requires us to keep.

You confirm that you have the rights to what you publish and that it follows the acceptable use policy. If you use AI tools to draft content, you are responsible for the published result as if you had written it yourself.

5. Zero tolerance for objectionable content

We do not tolerate objectionable or abusive content or behaviour on TribeTale. The acceptable use policy lists what is not allowed. Anyone can report a post or publication — in the app, tap ••• and choose Report, or email support@tribetale.com. We review reports and remove content that breaks the policy, and we can suspend or close the account of the writer who published it.

6. Plans and payments for writers

Writers can use TribeTale on the free plan or on a paid plan. Plan prices and limits are shown on our pricing page and at checkout. Paid plans are billed in advance each month or year and renew automatically until you cancel. Our payment partner processes plan payments for us. When you cancel, your plan stays active until the end of the period you have paid for and does not renew. Payments are not refundable for partly used periods, except where the law requires a refund. If we change the price of your plan, we will tell you at least 30 days before the new price applies, and you can cancel before then.

7. Paid subscriptions to publications

A writer can sell paid subscriptions to their publication through their own Stripe account, connected to TribeTale. The sale is between the writer and the subscriber: the writer sets the price, the payment goes to the writer's Stripe account, and the writer is responsible for refunds, taxes and the content they promise. TribeTale takes no share of that revenue; Stripe charges its own processing fees under its own terms. Subscribers manage or cancel a paid subscription using the account link in any email from the publication, or by contacting its writer.

The TribeTale iPhone app does not sell anything. It lets you read the publications you subscribe to and, if you are a writer, write and publish posts.

8. Using the Service fairly

Do not misuse the Service. In particular, do not break the law with it, send email to people who did not ask for it, try to get into accounts or systems that are not yours, overload or interfere with the Service, or copy or resell it. Use our programming interfaces only as documented and within their limits.

9. Ending your use

You can stop using the Service and delete your account at any time. In the app, go to Settings → Delete account; the support page explains how deletion works for readers and for writers. Deleting a writer account deletes every publication it owns, with its posts and subscriber list. Export anything you want to keep first.

We can suspend or close an account, or remove content, if it breaks these terms or the acceptable use policy, if we must to comply with the law, or to protect our users or the Service. Where it is reasonable and safe, we will tell you why and give you a chance to export your content. Sections 4 (for copies we may keep), 10, 11, 12 and 13 continue after your account ends.

10. Our responsibility

We work to keep TribeTale running, secure and backed up, but the Service is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we do not promise that it will be uninterrupted or error-free, and we disclaim implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We are not responsible for content that writers publish.

To the extent the law allows, Codas Labs will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, revenue or data. Our total liability for any claim about the Service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim and US$100. Some places do not allow these limits, so they may not all apply to you.

11. Claims about your content

If someone makes a claim against us because of content you published or because you broke these terms, you agree to cover the reasonable costs and losses that result, to the extent the law allows.

12. Copyright complaints

If you believe something on TribeTale infringes your copyright, email support@tribetale.com with the address of the content, the work you own, your contact details and a statement that you believe in good faith the use is not authorised. We will review it and remove infringing content. We close the accounts of repeat infringers.

13. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of North Carolina, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be heard in the state or federal courts located in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, and you and we agree to those courts' jurisdiction. If you live in a country whose laws give you the right to bring a claim in your local courts, these terms do not take that right away.

14. The iPhone app and Apple

If you use the TribeTale iPhone app, these terms are between you and Codas Labs, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for the app, its content, its maintenance or support, or any claim about it, including product liability, legal or regulatory claims and intellectual property claims. If the app fails to meet a warranty that applies by law, you may tell Apple and Apple will refund the price you paid for the app, if any; Apple has no other warranty obligation for it. You confirm that you are not in a country under a US government embargo or on a US government list of prohibited or restricted parties. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you. Your use of the app must also follow Apple's Media Services terms.

15. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the Service changes. If a change matters, we will update the date above and tell you by email or in the Service at least 30 days before it takes effect, unless the change is needed sooner for legal or safety reasons. If you keep using the Service after a change takes effect, the new terms apply. If you do not agree, stop using the Service and delete your account.

16. Everything else

These terms, the acceptable use policy and our privacy policies are the whole agreement between you and us about the Service. If part of these terms cannot be enforced, the rest still applies. If we do not enforce a term straight away, we can still enforce it later. You may not transfer these terms to anyone else without our agreement; we may transfer them as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of the Service.
