TribeTalevsGhost
Ghost is excellent, and TribeTale is built on it. The difference is what we added on top, and what Ghost's hosted plans charge per subscriber.

Where Ghost wins
We'll go first.
Ghost is the better product to build on, which is why we did
It is mature, open source, independent, and the editor is the best in the category. TribeTale is a fork of Ghost. We are not going to stand here and tell you the thing we chose to build on is bad.
If you can run a server, Ghost is free
Self-hosted Ghost costs nothing but your time and your infrastructure. If you are technical and you enjoy that, it is a genuinely excellent answer and you should take it.
And here is the turn
Then look at what Ghost's hosting charges per subscriber
Ghost(Pro) prices tightly on list size. Their $18 plan covers 1,000 members and cannot take paid subscriptions at all. Their $29 plan covers 1,000 members. Their $199 plan covers 10,000.
TribeTale Creator is $29 for 10,000 members — ten times Ghost's allowance at the same price — and $199 buys you 200,000 rather than 10,000.
The gap is not magic. Ghost is paying to send all that email. We let you bring your own sending provider, which is why we can stop counting.
On top of Ghost we added the things a hosted Ghost does not do: a control plane for running several sites, paid tiers that grant and revoke Discord roles, ten marketing-tool integrations, an assistant layer so AI can draft and publish into your newsletter, and audio versions of every post.

Moving over
What it actually takes.
This is the easy one. TribeTale imports a full Ghost export — posts, pages, tags, members, tiers and settings — because it is the same underlying format. If you are moving from self-hosted Ghost or from Ghost(Pro), your archive comes with you intact.
Questions people ask
- If TribeTale is built on Ghost, am I just paying for hosting?
- You are paying for hosting plus everything we built on top: the multi-site control plane, Discord role sync, ten marketing integrations, bring-your-own sending, the assistant layer and audio narration. None of that exists in Ghost. If you only need Ghost, self-host Ghost — we mean that.
- Is TribeTale as reliable as Ghost?
- Ghost has ten years of production behind it and we do not. We inherit its core, but the multi-tenant layer, the control plane and the integrations are ours and they are new. Judge us on that honestly.
- Can I move back to Ghost later?
- Yes. The export is Ghost's own format, so a full export imports straight into any Ghost install. That is deliberate — a product you cannot leave is not one you own.
